If you are a fan of the Ulaga Nayagan, go for it by all means.
If not, don’t complain about how complicated the movie is and how hard it is for you to sit through and grasp all of it!
Vishwaroopam 2, a sequel to Vishwaroopam 1 has come in a little later. And that somewhat makes the movie a little outdated too!
Nevertheless, Vishwaroopam 2 is claimed to be a spy thriller and the movie tries really hard to accomplish that factor.
Nonlinear narration is something that has to be dealt with in a very careful manner. It can make a hit or miss.
With Vishwaroopam 2, it is more of a miss than a hit. There are various other elements to the main plot that gets added to the movie which makes it more complicated.
Many viewers will just lose patience before they can grasp so many interlinked aspects in the movie.
Having said that, the movie has loads of Kamal Haasan elements – so if you are a Kamal fan, you are in for a treat.
Those Kamal Haasan elements take a bit of more space in the movie and for non-Kamal fans, or for those who are not used to Kamal’s type of movies, this could be an overkill.
You could feel that you are totally lost in the interlinked plots – and the nonlinear narration.
The movie not only gives you the sequel of Vishwaroopam 1 – but you also get to see the events that lead up to Vishwaroopam 1.
Some of those prequels can even be boring.
There’s too much action and despite that we feel the movie is not really tight as a spy thriller.
Kamal does great justice to his role, and in a way, he must. He has carried the movie in his shoulders and seamlessly fits into the various shades he takes upon.
Pooja Kumar fits in her role but her characterization is not concrete. Andrea on the other hand, comes as a confusing character as far as the setting is concerned.
We can’t really understand where she fits into the relationship. She also doesn’t get to show off much action! But whatever she does, she performs that well.
The story jumps from one point to another point, from one country to another country and from one timeline to another timeline – just like that.
How are we supposed to digest so much?
You have some scenes that are dialogue heavy, and they do really test your patience.
The movie definitely has its pluses though.
For one it is Kamal himself. Given his age, he is full of energy and aptly fits in his role. He does his role with utmost passion and it is quite evident on screen, especially in the action sequences.
Second, it is the action sequences. Although they are not over the top in terms of standard, they surely add up to the tense needed for a spy thriller.
Third, a few extra lite moments in the movie like the scenes involving mom, the sarcastic references etc.
Fourth, the apt detailing of historic events that show how much of effort is put into researching the background for the storyline.
However, inspite of all these positives, Vishwaroopam 2 still feels to be an over stretched thriller that is difficult to grasp and understand.
The nonlinear narration adds up to the length and the dialogue heavy scenes could have been made to the point.
Vishwaroopam 2 lacks the punch that Vishwaroopam 1 had.
If you are a fan of the Ulaga Nayagan, go for it by all means.
If not, don’t complain about how complicated the movie is and how hard it is for you to sit through and grasp all of it!
