Everything about Super Deluxe didn’t just create a dry hype, but it created hype with curiosity.
Right from the first look, and characters revelation and every update, the movie kept us curious and guessing as to what kind of a story it will be.
When the trailer was released, it almost drove the fans crazy! And that’s how most of the audience would feel after watching the movie too.
To start with, the movie may not settle with all kinds of audience. The movie is complex and the narration is layered with many questionable elements sprinkled throughout.
But it is the details that keeps you hooked right from the first frame to the last.
There’s so much in Super Deluxe that anyone would want to talk about. But talking about anything will be a spoiler.
And I’m wondering how I can review this movie in particular, without giving out the details and ruining the experience of those who haven’t watched it yet.
Story
Stories! Yes the movie has stories taking place on parallel lines. You don’t see much of a connection, but one story influences the other and so on.
The stories are so real that you would want to root for the protagonists – um, sorry the characters. Well, in fact there are no protagonists and antagonists I can say.
And there are no rights or wrongs. Whatever you feel you need is justice (for you).
The movie has loads of stuff that it presents to you – you can even feel overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you should consume.
Which is why the movie runs for a little less than 3 hours – the only negative I could see.
See – so far I am unable to reveal any story to you.
Super Deluxe is a rich platter of things of life – love, lust, porn, sex, marriage, sexuality, god, aliens, morals and the like (?!).
That’s all I can say.

Acting by cast
I would have to name each and every actors in the movie to appreciate their acting.
Each of them have characters of very different flavors and the casting is so perfect.
While we all have been curiously waiting for Vijay Sethupathi’s transgender role, Samantha scores casually as Vaembu.

She displays emotions pretty realistically (as her character is) and does so boldly. A total justice for the character.
Vijay Sethupathi – does this man ever disappoint us? Nope! He literally dissolves himself inside of Shilpa.

And you will only see Shilpa and no Vijay Sethupathi on screen even though you know its VJS who’s playing the role.
Fahadh Faasil pulls off this meaty role in a composed manner. Not every actor will fit in this role.

Bagavathi Perumal will make you hate him to the core.

Ramya Krishnan has taken up a role that any seasoned and famous actor of her age would not take up boldly.

But she has done all justice to it and has shined.
Ashwanth as Rasukutty steals our heart. And the four teenage boys are a rare find!
Mysskin is terrific as always.

Technicals
The movie shines technically. Right from the art to color palette to the camera angles everything has worked to up the goodness the film offers.
There’s art and detailing everywhere on screen, on every frame.
The color palette not only adds richness to the film, it sets the mood and helps us see the uniqueness of the movie.
Camera work by Vinod and Nirav Shah is awesome as it takes us to the director’s universe. The shots and angles are brilliantly placed to deliver the hidden gem like messages.
Yuvan deserves an applause for being one of the crucial factors for the movie’s success. With his background score he does total justice to the efforts of Thiagarajan.
Screenplay
This is the biggest strength of the movie. We have stories of different characters that take place in parallel time.
For such a multi-layered movie, bringing together the writing of four different persons (Mysskin, Nalan Kumarasamy, Neelan K. Sekar, Thiagarajan) is a challenge.

But Thiagarajan has done it very carefully so we are not presented with some scattered events but are able to relate to the flow of the play.
The movie does get long in the second half where some scenes definitely test your patience. You might wish certain sequences are cut short.
The pace also gets its lags in the second half due to the drag.
But despite that, Thiagarajan manages to pull off the script without allowing the audience to lose interest till the end.
Super Deluxe: Final Verdict
When you come out, you will have a sense of fullness – you would have had a terrific ride and empathized with all of the characters in the movie.
You would even feel overwhelmed. You would have failed to notice a lot of details and might wish to want to watch the movie again.
At the same time, there is also a chance that you might feel underwhelmed and ask: “Is this what all the hype was for?”
Nevertheless, I strongly suggest you to watch Super Deluxe in the theatre to enjoy that unique terrific experience!
