Summary
If you are a fan of Vijay Sethupathi, if you like dark comedy and if you have patience to tolerate a movie for the whole run time only to see that dark comedy towards the climax, go for it.
Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren, Vijay Sethupathi‘s most awaited dark comedy has hit the screens. The movie was so much expected by his fans, and all movie lovers in general.
Vijay Sethupathi has increased his screen value and a movie with him on-board is assumed to be a definite hit because of that.
But Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren (ONNPS) seemed to have been a miss rather than a hit.
The movie’s biggest plus is Vijay Sethupathi but that doesn’t help!
The star cast includes Vijay Sethupathi, Gautham Karthik, Niharika Konidela, Gayathrie, Ramesh Thilak, Daniel Annie Pope, and Viji Chandrasekhar among the others.
The movie is depicted as a dark comedy, and yes it is – but the comic part of it doesn’t seem to have been formulated well.
As a result the movie (I mean, the director, cast and crew) desperately tries to make us laugh and only succeed with that a few times.
First of all, hats off to the team for taking up such a weird script. And Vijay Sethupathi is one with guts who always chooses to take up risky roles.
And so he has done with ONNPS too. What the crew aimed is to work on a wacky script – but the script is only rarely wacky.
Mostly the audience held off till the end for the sake of Vijay Sethupathi – the movie also got so much hype because of that name and the the fact that the promos of the movie claimed that Vijay Sethupathi appears in different looks.
Nevertheless the movie is not too bad. The second half towards the climax gets somehow serious and funny at the same time.
If you are a fan of dark comedy you will end up liking the movie. Or you should be a fan of Vijay Sethupathi.
If neither is the case, you might end up feeling alienated towards the script.
The plot goes like this. There is a tribal village in Andhra Pradesh and Vijay Sethupathi playsYeman, the head of the village.
The occupation of people in the village is to loot. And they do the stealing job religiously, with pride and sincerity.
Yeman comes to Chennai in search of his “wife” whom he had pledged to marry while she was a little girl.
That girl Sowmiya (Niharika Konidela) is a bubbly college girl who has a soft corner for Harish (Gautham Karthik).
Harish is an easy go guy who is referred to as “loosu payan” and he fits in the role perfectly. He is so annoying and his portion of comedy is terrible.
Yeman kidnaps Sowmiya in order to marry her and takes her back to his village. Harish follows to save the girl.
Now we have Gayathrie who is in love with Yeman, and she does everything she can to stop the wedding.
Harish and his friend Sathish (Danie Anne Pope) are also in the mix.
The movie gets interesting and somewhat funny in the last 20 minutes towards the climax. The climax is predictable too!
If you are a fan of Vijay Sethupathi, if you like dark comedy and if you have patience to tolerate a movie for the whole run time only to see that dark comedy towards the climax, go for it.
