Oru Kuppai Kathai is a lovely attempt and is indeed a beautiful story that comes on screen in a nice package.
But the screenplay and other messages dilute the movie and makes the storyline less impactful and boring to watch.
Having said that, you can definitely watch it one time!
Oru Kuppai Kathai has an apt title as it deals with the story of a man who is a trash collector. The movie is claimed to be based on true events.
Before the title starts to roll, you see the quote on screen – To err is human.
And then the movie finishes off with the rest of that quote – To forgive is divine.
The movie is what happens in between these two lines.
Kumar (choreographer Dhinesh Master) is a trash collector and his parents are searching for a bride for him.
There are so many failed attempts and finally they find a partner for him, Poongodi (Manisha Yadav).
Poongodi doesn’t know about the job of Kumar and she thinks he is a clerk. Poongodi’s parents are aware of the fact and they believe that over time, she will accept him as he is.
But their parents’ assumption and belief fall flat. When Poongodi comes to know about Kumar’s job, she gets disappointed and emotionally disturbed.
By the time, she also finds out she is pregnant.
Here comes neighbour Arjun (Sujo Mathew) to whom Poongodi gets attracted as a result of this emotional disturbance perhaps.
And when matters go over and beyond, she elopes with him along with her baby.
Manisha Yadav nicely fits into the role of a cheating wife who also has to emote so many mixed feelings.
Dhinesh Master is more than OK with the role, given that it is his first on-screen appearance as a actor. His choreography career has given him hands to help with emotions.
But he could have done a lot better at many occasions.
Sujo Matthew is a well known model who perfectly fits in his role. He delivers emotions to prove himself to be more than an eye candy.
You also have Yogi Babu in the cast, but his characterization is so underwritten. He gives us a few laughs in the beginning and then vanishes just like that.
The movie tells us so many different messages which is where it gets overwhelming and diluted. The screenplay also falls flat in the execution part as the movies gets to sound like a TV serial.
Having said that, the movie takes a bold stand on various overlooked aspects of the society – that should be appreciated.
But it is that same thing that takes us off from the storyline and we feel overfed with messages and happenings.
It is strange that the movie managed to get a U certificate given that the main story line involves extra marital affair and you also have a scene of rape attempt.
Overall, Oru Kuppai Kathai is a lovely attempt and is indeed a beautiful story that comes on screen in a nice package.
But the screenplay and other messages dilute the movie and makes the storyline less impactful and boring to watch.
Having said that, you can definitely watch it one time!
