( votes)Mohini Movie Review
Overall, Mohini fails to scare us and isn’t even convincing as a horror drama. There’s only some drama – but absolutely no horror and logic.
Watch it if you are a die hard Trisha fan.
Mohini is Trisha’s comeback movie – after quite a while Trisha has done a female centric movie where she has the lead role of uttermost importance.
And since she had quite some downtime in the cine industry with movies, Mohini should give her a breakthrough. But despite Trisha’s good screen appearance, Mohini didn’t do much as expected!
Why? Because the movie simply didn’t serve its purpose.
Mohini, as we all know from the trailer and the poster, is supposed to be a horror thriller right? But the movie is neither scary nor logical.
There was quite some nice drama and even a few sentimental scenes. Trisha’s performance as ghost has improved a lot since Aranmanai.
We have quite some strong star cast in the movie – some for comedy, some for drama and some for the sentimental part. All of them do their part quite well.
The screenplay though was a big let down.
The story goes like this – We have Vaishnavi (Trisha) who is interested in cooking and has a popular Youtube Channel where she posts cake recipes.
She gets to go to London, driven by the Spirit of Mohini (Trisha) who was killed brutally for exposing child trafficking done by his boss.
Vaishnavi actually agrees to go to London to help her friend’s boyfriend (played by Yogi Babu). They stay at the place of Ganeshkar and Jangiri Madhumitha.
The ghost of Mohini waits and waits, trying to give us scares, and then scares the people at that house until it finally possesses Vaishnavi.
We also have Jackky Bhagnani who plays Trisha’s (Vaishnavi’s) boyfriend – there is absolutely no scope for his character in the movie apart from falling in love at first sight, do a couple of songs and then run away from possessed Trisha in the climax.
Actors like Suresh, Poornima, and Yogi Babu are wasted. Yogi Babu tries to kindle laughs with his dialogues and only succeeds at a very few places.
The comic scenes of the people of household in London are meant to give us laughs, but they are draggy and annoying.
The ghost takes a lot of time to make an appearance and finally possess Vaishnavi – by that time the audience have already lost their patience.
Even after possession, does the ghost get to business and take revenge? Yes, but in a very very slow manner. The story of Mohini (the other Trisha) tries to give us a touchy message but that part is also not very impactful.
The whole ghost part is designed as to make us believe that the ghost thing is real backed by science. They come up with all kinds of religious, witchcraft, science and other kind of theories to prove their part.
And there are some ridiculous remedies/moments – like
- someone has to be sacrificed,
- jumping over a waterfall and swimming miles to escape from the ghost,
- the ghost driving a car and trying to murder (despite all the power she has),
- the ghost cannot touch the holy water,
- killing someone and then doing CPR to fool the ghost?
- the DNA connection theory for possession and power…
… blah blah blah.
These are a few examples of scenes with absolutely no logic and sound so obviously ridiculous.
There could have been more of ghost moments to scare or some action for the ghost part – that could have at least saved the film a bit. But that too lacks in the movie.
The scenes where ghost takes revenge lacks power
If you are a die hard Trisha fan, you could enjoy her screen presence. She is beautiful. But she doesn’t fit into the ghost role!
