Summary
Kodiveeran is a one time watch – a decent family entertainer with a template plot and lots of emotions.
By now we are very well aware of Sasikumar’s typical on screen appearance – a greedy, yet good to heart villager who stands to save the truth.
Kodiveeran is yet another movie in the list!
Kodiveeran is produced by Sasikumar’s own Company Productions – the movie was talked about a week ago after the co-producer and Sasikumar’s close relative, Ashok committed suicide.
The star cast of Kodiveeran is ample – Sasikumar, Pasupathy, Vidharth, Mahima Nambiyar, Sanusha, Poorna, Balasaravanan, and Vikram Sukumaran among the others.
The movie has room for lots of sentiment, action and cinematic heroism. But the fact is, nothing strikes the chord as the plot is too much of a formula that carries nothing new.
The plot itself is not tight. We have characters in the movie that are loosely connected. We have scenes in the movie that appear for no reason.
Sasikumar plays a fortune teller in Kodiveeran who often utters prophetic words to those who seek him.
He has a sister Parvathy (Sanusha) who’s job in the movie is to praise her brother Kodiveeran. The brother takes extremely good care of the sister and they two are so affectionate.
We have the villain Villangam Vellaikaran (Pasupathy) who is the egoistic bad guy. He has an evil sister Velu (Poorna) who provokes men to do more evil stuff.
Vidharth appears as an honest government official and he is the only character that doesn’t sound cinematic and doesn’t utter punch dialogues.
He appears in neat formals and talks less. He has a sister Mahima Nambiyar who is Kodiveeran’s girlfriend.
Subash (Vidharth) also happens to be Parvathy’s husband. And he sends Villangam and his brother in law, Adhigaaram to jail.
There starts the rivalry. Villangam wants to take revenge by putting the life of everyone related to Subash in danger. But Subash has Kodiveeran in the guard line.
The story then takes us through various scenes where Kodiveeran and Villangam catch up with each other.
The screenplay is a big let down and the first hour of the movie doesn’t evoke the required seriousness.
There are various scenes showcasing the religious rituals of the locality – while it is something to appreciate, too much of the same ruins the pace of the movie.
Kodiveeran – Final verdict?
The movie could have been a lot better, seriously. The plot which is already formulaic is ruined by a template screenplay which is also slow.
The screenplay gets the plot lost at various places and fails to bond the characters in the movie together.
Nevertheless, the cast have done their job decently.
The movie has lots of clashes, murders, dead bodies, post mortem, sisters provoking brothers for revenge and so on.
At some point things get too repetitive and formulaic.
At the same time, the rural and sub-rural feel and plot in the movie holds the audience tight from start till the end – in particular, audience from those areas can very well relate to the emotions, which is a plus.
And, by the way, the movie has a reference to Thala Ajith’s Veeram – a note to Thala fans!
Kodiveeran is a one time watch – a decent family entertainer with a template plot and lots of emotions.
