Summary
Overall, Kaatrin Mozhi is a breezy movie that you can go watch in the theatres with your family and end up coming out with positive vibes.
Had the movie been cut short a bit, the screenplay made a tad tighter and the melodrama in the climax avoided, it could have been a sizzling positive breezy entertainer.
Kaatrin Mozhi is the official remake of Tumhari Sulu starring Vidhya Balan. Tumhari Sulu was a hit and had gained Vidhya Balan lots of appreciation and a few awards too.
Did Radha Mohan make a convincing remake? Let’s find out.
Kaatrin Mozhi is about a happy homemaker Viji, wonderfully played by Jyothika, who wants to “do it” in her life.
She has been not a great achiever so far, apart from winning the lemon-spoon competition in her kid’s school. She messed up quite a lot so far in her life, including clearing class 12 exams and failing with a few business ideas.
But she has the spark in her still alive and she wants to prove to others that she can “do it” no matter what.
She gets angry when she is mocked of her failures (by her dad and sisters), and hence wants to prover herself. Fortunately, she gets lucky to land a RJ job.
Viji has a wonderful, supporting husband Balu (Vidaarth), loving son and that makes her world.
As an RJ, she gets to host a night show through which she becomes quite popular pretty soon.
Did she “do it” and prove herself as an RJ, or did the new job interfere with her previously peaceful life as a homemaker?
That makes the rest of the plot.
Jyothika carries the movie on her shoulders with her awesome performance. She doesn’t try hard to make things work on screen.
Rather, she casually pulls the role off like a pro. Her role itself carries a lot of positivity and who other than the charming Jyothika can deliver it well?
Hats off to the one and only Jyothika for that.
Vidaarth does underplay a bit so Jo’s role gets even stronger, and he deserves applause for doing so.
We have quite a few supporting characters including M. S. Bhaskar, Mayilsamy, Manobala, and the like who do their roles quite well.
Cameo appearances by STR and Yogi Babu do not create great impact.
The movie is a feel good, family entertainer and we have a decent amount of women audience that can relate to the plot and in particular, to the character of Viji.
Having said that, the movie does lack the sizzle it needs. The chemistry between Vidaarth and Jyothika only works so much.
The screenplay could have been made crispier as well. The pace does slow down at various places and that probably adds to the run time of the movie.
On the technical side, there is not much of an extraordinary treatment needed for a very basic, and straightforward movie like this.
Still cinematographer Mahesh Muthuswami has done what is necessary for the movie and has delivered pretty neat shots.
Praveen could have done a bit more of editing to make the movie shorter. However, his editing is on point.
Songs are OKish and the BG goes well with the mood of the movie. Dirty Pondatti and Kelimbattale Vijayalakshmi are the songs you can remember.
