Kaali Movie Review
In short, Kaali is yet another family drama attempted by Vijay Antony in his belief that one such template would work out.
Vijay Antony remained as one of those few actors who carefully choose different kinds of scripts and easily deliver hit movies.
Naan, Salim, India Pakistan are a few of his movies that were talked about. In particular Naan and Salim surely did give a impact.
However, Vijay Antony seems to get a bit distracted with doing movies of the same kind these days – to be specific he seems to have convinced himself that a family drama with sentiments would do to give a hit.
Pichaikaran was one such attempt and it did somewhat well mainly because it appeared fresh when he was into movies like Naan and Salim.
But he started following the template with Annadurai and it was disappointing. Kaali is yet another family drama template.
The movie’s first 7 minutes was released shortly before the release and it says what the movie is all about.
Vijay Antony plays Bharat a NRI doctor who lives a rich, happy life but misses something. He always comes across a nightmarish dream involving a bull and a snake.
When his mom gets ill and when he volunteers to donate his kidney, he learns that his current parents are not their original parents.
This gives him curiosity and he strongly believes that his dream has something to do with his past. He sets out to India to dig his past.
What he discovers forms the rest of the story. For a family drama, Kaali has a nice storyline.
But the execution is so lethargic that leaves us with a slow and dull screenplay. The first half struggles so hard to get to the core of the story.
The second half though gets a bit interesting compared to the first half. Vijay Antony gets to play the characters who are his suspects as his “father”.
The concept is interesting but it is established quite late in the movie when we are already left overwhelmed by the scenes that are dragging.
Another major drawback of the movie is that Kaali’s search is not compelling enough. Given that it is the core storyline, and since it is not engaging enough, we are not involved in the movie.
Vijay Antony delivers his usual acting in all the roles he gets to play. He must work on improving his facial expressions and dialogue delivery.
Moreover we get to see him as a doctor one more time!
Anjali’s role as Kaali’s love interest is not strong enough either.
In short, Kaali is yet another family drama attempted by Vijay Antony in his belief that one such template would work out.
