Vijay Sethupathi is known for his unique attempts. One such attempt is Junga. But not all attempts work out well. One such example is Junga.
If you are a VJS fan, you would definitely celebrate the movie. If not, it could be a big disappointment to you!
Junga – a strangely named dark comedy attempted by Vijay Sethupathi. This kind of a movie is not new to tamil cinema and also to Vijay Sethupathi.
Being one of the producers, Vijay Sethupathi has given his 100% to the film. Be it the expressions on face, dialogue delivery, action sequences, comedy, and make-up transformations, Vijay Sethupathi has carried it all in his shoulders.
Supporting characters like side-kick Yogi Babu, Saranya Ponvannan, the Don’s mom and Don’s grandma do their job outstandingly well.
Especially the grandma deserves a special mention. Saranya, as usual, captures everyone’s attention when she’s on screen. She has also tried a slang and it has worked out well.
Madonna Sebastian has done a cameo role and the movie would have perfectly done well without that portion of the story. Her role, and the associated song are both totally unnecessary to the movie.
Sayyeshaa, on the other hand, has some scope, but still cannot strongly create an impact. However she does her job neatly.
Junga decides to be a stingy don after hearing the flashback of how his grandfather and father happened to be lavishly spending dons.
A property of theirs (a theatre) needs to be retrieved off loan and hence, Junga is as stingy as he can so he could save money and retrieve the theatre.
How stingy he can be is established in a few scenes, and some of them are awkwardly extreme!
Yogi Babu helps to give us a few laughters and his comedy is one of the factors that helps us to sit through the movie.
The first half is much better than the second half. Once the lead characters go to Paris, the movie takes a totally disappointing turn and gets absurdly inconsistent.
You end up confused as to how you should take the movie – is it a spoof? or a serious don movie? or a dark comedy? The director seemed to have lost track of what he had in mind!
Vijay Sethupathi’s characterization is inconsistent throughout the movie – when you enjoy his comedy, you suddenly get a strict action scene.
So when you make up your mind that he is a serious don, the very next scene puts your hopes off and turns him into a comedian.
Various incidents sound very old school as well!
Nevertheless one point deserves a mention here – Vijay Sethupathi is so stingy on-screen as Junga, but definitely not as a producer for Junga.
He has been so generous on the movie budget. However, it is painful to see that the money is not used fruitfully. All of the sequences in Paris could have been shot anywhere without harming the flow of the story!
Overall, Vijay Sethupathi is known for his unique attempts. One such attempt is Junga. But not all attempts work out well. One such example is Junga.
If you are a VJS fan, you would definitely celebrate the movie. If not, it could be a big disappointment to you!
